1195727 Canoe

Patent Number

Patent Date

Patentee
Joe Ranco (Penobscot Canoe Company)

This patent describes two novel features in the construction of canoes.

First is the so-called "spearhead" deck, where the inwales are bevelled before reaching the stems, and the deck is notched to receive the inwale tips (compare this with the later "arrowhead" decks of the St. Louis Meramec Canoe Company.

The second feature is what the Penobscot Canoe Company called their Notacrack canoe. Ribs are bent over the form as usual, but then a second layer of transverse ribs (presumably of planking stock) are installed with joints between landing on ribs. Finally the exterior planking is installed as usual.
