Fred Beauvis, [sic] the French-Canadian-Indian guide, named as co-respondent by James S. Stillman in his case against the former "Fifi" Potter.

Fred Beauvais was the superintendent of Stillman's property at Grand-Anse, PQ. The case was widely-reported in the newspapers at the time; those interested in learning more can start at Stillman's Wikipedia Page.

The canoe is interesting because it appears to be a smooth-skin lapstrake canoe with many features similar to a Rushton Indian, with the exception that this canoe has narrow, (presumably) hardwood ribs, whereas the Rushton Indian had wide, cedar ribs.
